Gym-Based Rehabilitation

What is it?

Gym-based rehabilitation is not always needed as part of your injury rehabilitation or persistent pain recovery. However, it can in some instances be beneficial and a good option. We have an onsite gym space which strives to be inclusive of everyone and to create a welcoming, non-judgemental environment.

Gym-based rehabilitation benefits:

  • Provides various ways to load tissues and build strength meeting the demands of your life, work or sport.

  • Strength training can be very beneficial in the rehabilitation of a number of injuries.

  • It is safe and does not have to aggravate your pain when completed with the guidance of a healthcare professional.

  • It can help in making your body feel stronger, less fragile and able to adapt to new stimulus.

  • Can provide an environment that allows you to purely focus on rehab without distractions.

  • Strength and resistance training benefits go far beyond just assisting in recovery from injury or persistent pain, it is hugely important for general health and nearly all ages.

What to expect

Gym-based rehabilitation is usually completed for a reason, and with a specific goal. It ideally is also part of a wider treatment plan. Therefore, initially we will take you through a comprehensive assessment where we will discuss your goals, symptoms, health and other relevant factors in the clinic. An assessment often does include a physical component. At the end of the assessment we will discuss a treatment plan going forward to reach your goals that’s tailored to your circumstances. If gym-based rehabilitation is deemed appropriate as part of your plan, we can set-up an exercise program for you and go through the exercises with you. We have a gym on-site however, if you do have a preferred gym in town and would like to be shown here, we can organize this also.

FAQ

Will gym exercises worsen my pain? This is possible, there are examples where certain pain conditions can be aggravated by resistance exercises. Often exercises can still be modified in different ways to make it tolerable. However, in some circumstances other options may be more appropriate, this can be determined during the initial assessment in collaboration with your healthcare professional.

What do I wear to the gym? It can be dependent on the specific policy of that particular gym. In our facility we usually say, whatever you are most comfortable in. Some form of footwear is encouraged.
